"Life is a combination of mind, body, and reincarnating soul. Ayurveda is the most sacred science of life, beneficial to humans both in this world and the world beyond"
— Maharishi Charak
Ayurveda is contemplated by many scholars to be the oldest ameliorating science. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means “The Science of Life.” Ayurvedic knowledge originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and is often called the “Mother of All Healing.”
Medicine is a very ancient art and drugs have been used in days of antiquity as far back as history can take us. History of medicine is a fascinating subject as it is a saga of man's struggle against disease. As civilization advances and as the disease pattern changes, medical science also changes. Ayurveda is the system of medicine that evolved in India with a rationale logical foundation and it has survived as a distinct entity from remote antiquity to the present day. The fundamentals on which the Ayurvedic system is based are essentially true for all times and do not change.
The word Ayurveda is made up of two components, 'Ayush' meaning life and 'Veda' meaning science, hence Ayurveda is 'Science of life'. The Ayurvedic texts were promulgated by Lord Dhanvantri, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The genesis of Ayurveda is attributed to Atharva Veda, where information regarding diseases and their treatments is mentioned. Later, from the 6th Century BC to 7th Century AD there was systematic development of the science and it is called Samhita or compendium period when several classical works (Sushruta Samhita, Charaka Samhita, etc) were produced by several authors and during this period there is evidence of organized medical care.
Ayurveda has also defined health as the equilibrium that is made up of three biological units (Doshas) and body tissues (Dhatus) and a state of happiness of soul, senses, and mind. These states will certainly lead to social and spritual well-being of an individual. This is very much in conformity with the above definition of health as stated by World Health Organisation. Hence the importance of Ayurvedic treatment is relevant in modern times as well.
The main objective of Ayurveda is the maintenance and promotion of positive health cure of diseases, through medicine, dietary restrictions, and regulated lifestyle. Ayurveda is a science that contains knowledge about life, health, and longevity. It combines products that are mainly derived from plants, herbs, and minerals followed by a well-balanced diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle. Unlike other methods of treatments, ayurvedic treatments are targeted toward specific health problems. The treatments are specifically designed considering a human being’s physical, emotional, and social well being by balancing between all three of these elements. Treatment in Ayurveda is a healing process that aims at getting rid of the disease, preventing its future occurrence, and ensuring overall well-being. The treatment attacks the root cause of the problem as its objective is not just restoring health but also to create balance in the body. It is achieved by balancing the doshas which in turn eliminates toxins and strengthens the digestive system thereby opening up channels and rejuvenating the tissues.
According to The Ayurvedic philosophy, all functions of this unfathomable universe are due to energies, these energies are extraordinary combinations of five elements - Ether (Akash), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), Water (Jal) and Earth (Prithvi). Sanskrit words Vata, Kapha, Pitta convey the concepts revolving around such energies. These three qualities are permutations and combinations of five elements. Every individual has qualities of Vata, Kapha & Pitta, where one is primary, another secondary and the third one is least prominent. Energy is required for all cell functions and growth, nutrition uptake, digestion, cellular lubrication, mobility, movement of various fluids, and respiration. The principles of these qualities govern all the basic biology of a body. Any disease is a result of an improper cell function which is caused due to an excess or deficiency in Vata, Pitta, or Kapha. Diseases are also caused due to some toxins. Ayurveda is the science, subtle art of manifestation that deals with curing and preventing the disease by creating a balance in energies and removing toxins through natural remedies.
